Südwesten USA: Ein bebilderter Reisebericht
Nachdem ich vor ziemlich genau 2 Jahren die Ostküste der USA (NYC, Boston, New England, etc.) bereist habe, war ich in diesem Spätsommer mit meiner Freundin an der US amerikanischen Westküste:
Mit einem Mietwagen sind wir in San Francisco gestartet … und hatten drei Wochen Zeit diesen wieder in Las Vegas abzugeben (was auch unser Abflug-Ort war).
Um eine möglichst spontan die Reiseroute planen / ändern zu können hatten wir die Hotels bewusst nicht im voraus gebucht, lediglich die Hotels am Start- sowie dem Ziel-Ort hatten wir über das Internet vorgebucht (unbedingt empfehlenswert).
Die Reise war insgesamt wirklich super schön, ziemlich teuer und erlebnisreich. Wir …
- … sind dabei insgesamt ca. 3300 miles (ca. 5300 km) gefahren
- … haben vier Staaten (Kalifornien, Arizona, Nevada und Utah) bereist oder sind zumindest teilweise durchgefahren
- … haben mehr als 1800 Fotos (ca. 10 GB) gemacht
Unsere Reiseroute ist etwas von der zuvor geplanten (siehe Blogpost) abgewichen. Hier der ziemlich exakt von uns gefahrene Weg:

Was war toll:
Toll ist die unglaubliche (landschaftliche) Abwechslung und Vielfalt im Westen der USA. So ist die Küste häufig nebelverhangen und zeigt sich mit riesigen, dramatischen Felsenklippen. Das Wetter ist dort häufig rau und kühl.
Nur wenige (zumindest für amerikanische Maßstäbe) Kilometer weiter befindet sich bereits die Wüste mit extremen heißen und trockenen Klima und u.a. sehr tollen Felsformationen (Monument Valley, Valley of Fire, etc.).
Ok, es gibt im Westen der USA einige schöne und spannende Städte (allen voran San Francisco), dennoch fahren die meisten Touristen wohl weder wegen der Städte, der nicht vorhandenen jungen Historie oder aber dem Junk-Food Essen dorthin.
Wirklich sehenswert ist definitiv die Landschaft, die Natur und damit u.a. National-Parks.
Generell gibt es im Westen der USA unglaublich viel zu sehen. Wir waren die drei Wochen jeden Tag unterwegs und haben versucht möglichst viel “mitzunehmen” … ich denke ich könnte aber nochmals drei Wochen fast eine identische Route fahren und hätte keine Probleme dann nochmals fast komplett andere Sachen zu unternehmen.
Was war nicht so toll:
… nicht so toll ist, dass die National-Parks sehr unter den ungeheuren Besuchermassen leiden. So kommen derzeit etwa 4 Mio. Besucher in Yosemite, 1,5 nach Bryce, fast 3 Mio. nach Zion und 5 Mio. zum Grand Canyon, etc.
Trotz aller Verbotsschilder werden Tiere gefüttert (die häufig daran sterben), Pflanzen niedergetrampelt oder Felswände beschmiert. Eine Lösung hierfür wäre wohl nur die Eintrittspreise drastisch zu erhöhen oder generell die Besuchermassen zu reglementieren.
Nachfolgend habe ich eine Auswahl einiger Fotos unseren einzelnen Stationen zugeordnet. Weil ich schon gefragt wurde: Ich habe alle Fotos mit meiner Panasonic DMC-TZ5 (meine Digicam-Timeline) mit manuellen Einstellungen aufgenommen. Die Fotos finden sich auch in meiner MobileMe Gallery.
San Francisco:
Tolle Stadt! San Francisco war und ist (?) eine der bedeutendsten Hafenstädte an der Westküste und hat (wie vieles an der kalifornischen Küste) einen Namen mit spanischem Ursprung.
In der Bucht vor San Francisco liegt Alcatraz (haben wir uns natürlich auch angesehen) sowie weitere kleine Inseln wie Angel Island oder Treasure Island.
Bekannte und sehenswerte Hotspots sind natürlich die Golden Gate Bridge (konnte wir trotz mehrmaliger Versuche aufgrund des Nebels nicht wirklich sehen), die „kurvenreichste Straße der Welt“ (Lombard-Street) oder die historischen Häusern am Alamo Square (”Painted Ladies”).
Yosemite National Park
Yosemite liegt etwa 300 Kilometer östlich von San Francisco und ist wirklich traumhaft schön. Weltbekannt sind El Capitan (ein etwa 1000 Meter hoher Monolith) oder der sogn. Half Dome. Spektakuläre Ausblicke gibs vom Glacier Point in das Yosemite Valley (dort kann man bspw. Campen). Leider waren einige (sonst sehr spektakuläre) Wasserfälle jedoch fast völlig ausgetrocknet (ist gegen Ende des Sommers wohl normal).
Im Park befinden sich außerdem Haine mit Riesenmammutbäumen, der größte mit 200 Bäumen nennt sich Mariposa Grove.
Monterey
Monterey ist eine kleine Stadt mit ca. 30.000 Einwohnern an der Küste, unterhalb von San Francisco.
Die Stadt diente als Hintergrund einiger Romane von John Steinbeck, bspw. Die Straße der Ölsardinen. Leider ist nur noch wenig von dem Charme der beschriebenen Fischerstadt erhalten geblieben – die Stadt ist immer noch nett anzusehen, aber mittlerweile (zu) sehr touristisch.
Das Highlight in Monterey ist wohl das Aquarium, riesig groß und bei unserem Besuch waren auch weiße Haie anwesend.
Highway #1
Wenn man die Küste weiter nach Süden fährt, dann sollte man als Tourist unbedingt den berühmten Highway #1 (California State Route) nehmen. Diese Straße ist sehr kurvenreich führt dafür aber direkt am Pazifik entlang und offenbart den einen oder anderen spektakulären Blick auf die (bei uns sehr nebelverhangene) Küste.
Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara ist wohl einer DER Anziehungspunkte für Touristen, gilt als Hauptstadt der „American Riviera“ und ist wohl eine der teuersten Wohngegenden in den USA. Die Stadt präsentiert sich dementsprechend sehr sauber, sehr schick, sehr teuer.
Für mich sehr überraschend ist Santa Barbara sehr spanisch bzw. mexikanisch – Gebäude sehen spanisch aus, fast alle Straßennamen sind auf spanisch, etc.
Grand Canyon
Der Grand Canyon liegt bereits in Arizona und ist eine ca. 450 Kilometer lange Schlucht an dessen Grund der Colorado River fließt. Beim Grand Canyon gibt es nur wenige Wanderwege, dafür aber fantastische Ausblicke in die Schlucht (die auf den Fotos nur halb so toll aussehen). Ein und dergleichen Ausblick kann aufgrund der Sonneneinstrahlung je nach Tages- und Jahres-Zeit völlig anders aussehen.
Sedona
… lebt mittlerweile wohl fast nur vom Tourismus, die aufgrund des tollen Panoramas mit den roten, gigantischen Sandsteinen in die Stadt kommen. Auch sehenswert ist die sehr moderne “Chapel of the Holy Cross”, eine um 1950 in einen Berg gebaute Kapelle.
Bryce Canyon
Der Bryce Canyon ist eigentlich gar kein Canyon sondern stellt ein natürliches Amphitheater dar. Für mich war Bryce der schönste National-Park, den wir auf der Reise angesehen haben. Die Felsformationen sehen wirklich super cool aus …
Antelope Canyon
Der Antelope Canyon ist ein sogn. Slot Canyon, also sehr steil (ca. 45 m) – dafür aber recht kurz (ca. 400 m).
Der Antelope Canyon gilt als Tipp für alle Fotografen (oder die sich dafür halten), da sich hier durch die Erosion im Sandstein tolle Formen gebildet haben durch die sich von oben scheinende Sonne sehr bunte Farbenspektren ergeben.
Auch ohne eine wirklich professionelle Cam habe ich ein paar ganz nette Aufnahmen hinbekommen.
Monument Valley
Das Monument Valley liegt innerhalb der Navajo-Nation-Reservation und vermittelt etwas Wild-West-Romantik. Diverse John Wayne wurden meines Wissens hier gedreht. Das Monument Valley bietet zwar weder tolle Wanderwege und man muss mit dem Auto (wir hatten einen hierfür unpassenden Van) eine sehr schlecht befahrbare Straße in Betracht nehmen, kann dafür aber tolle Aufnahmen von den Sandsteinformationen machen.
Hoover Dam & Las Vegas
Wir haben vier Nächte im “Paris Las Vegas” gewohnt. Wirklich schickes Hotel und sogar recht günstig. Da ich leider weder die Spielregeln der typischen Casino-Spiele wie Blackjack oder Craps verstehe, habe ich einige $ in der Slotmachine (”one-armed Bandit”) verspielt. Aber leider nicht wirklich was gewonnen 
Zion National Park
Von Las Vegas aus haben wir einen Tagesausflug in den Zion National Park gemacht – nach Bryce Meinung meine Meinung nach einer der schönsten. Obwohl der Park mitten in der Wüste liegt, ist dieser (aufgrund Wasservorkommen) grün und dicht bewaldet.
Im Park präsentiert sich eine schluchtenreiche Landschaft mit unzähligen Wanderwegen. Sollte ich nochmals dorthin kommen, so möchte ich dann unbedingt den Wanderweg “Angel’s Landing” machen, bei man mit verankerten Ketten ein Felsmassiv hinausklettern muss.

Wunderschön ist es dort! Und wer will sich dorthin stellen und den Touristen verbieten, sich die Parks anzusehen? Hiermit wird ja ein großer Teil der Touristikwirtschaft gemacht. Allerdings sollte man sich überlegen, ebenfalls einen Großteil in die Erhaltung und ggf. Bewachung des PArks zu investieren, damit dieser auch weiteren Generationen erhalten bleibt.

Interessanter Artikel über die wohl schönste Gegend der USA. Wenn man die Nationalparks ausserhalb der Hauptreisezeiten besucht, sind sie meiner Meinung nach gar nicht so überlaufen. Es sind nun mal zum Teil sehr bekannte Natinalparks. Logisch, das in einem 300 Millionen-Einwohner-Land dann auch jedes Jahr einige Millionen kommen. Tipp: In den “hinteren Ecken” der NP hat man oft seine Ruhe.
